The History of Double XP Weekends in Black Ops Titles

As we eagerly await the launch of Black Ops 6, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the history of Double XP events in the Black Ops series. These weekends have been a staple of the franchise for years, and understanding how they’ve evolved could give us a hint of what’s coming in the next game.

Double XP in the Original Black OpsThe first Black Ops title, released in 2010, introduced many of the core mechanics that would become hallmarks of the series. Double XP weekends were an early feature, often tied to holiday events or special in-game celebrations. The excitement surrounding the first Double XP event was palpable, as it provided players with the perfect opportunity to grind through the levels. The combination of these events with community challenges added an extra layer of depth to the experience.

The community was excited to see that Double XP wasn’t restricted to a single mode—allowing everyone to get the boost they needed, no matter their preferred playstyle.
In Black Ops Cold War (2020), Double XP events became a regular fixture, often spanning entire weekends or even longer durations. In addition to traditional Double XP, we also saw the introduction of Double Weapon XP weekends, which allowed players to level up their guns faster and unlock attachments more quickly. These events kept players engaged throughout the life cycle of the game and helped the community remain active for months after launch.
Looking Forward to Black Ops 6So, what does all this mean for Black Ops 6? Given the series' history, it’s safe to assume that Double XP events will continue to be a major part of the game’s post-launch life. We can expect regular Double XP weekends as well as themed events tied to seasonal content. There will likely be new ways to earn XP—perhaps through new modes, challenges, or unique gameplay features.
What we know for sure is that Double XP will remain one of the most anticipated events in the Black Ops community, and it will be essential for those who want to reach the highest ranks and unlock everything the game has to offer.
